Campbell & Ehrenfried

Brown, Campbell & Co was one of the earliest businesses in Auckland, a partnership established in 1840 between John Logan Campbell and William Brown. It Continued until 1874 when Brown relinquishd his interest in the firm. In 1897 there was an amalgamation with Ehrenfried Bros and the business became Campbell & Ehrenfried. (ABC November 1976)

Although better known for their brewery interests, like Hancock's interests in the Te Aroha mineral waters, C&E had a similar interest in the Puriri mineral water. Exactly when the Ehrenfried Bros became involved I don't know but the NZ Herald of October 21 1878 reports the following:

Mr Kelly, late of Tokatea mine, Coromandel, proposes to use the soda water from the spring on his property at Puriri.
The timber has already been sent up with which to erect the necessary buildings, and all the appliances for aerating the water will shortly be on the ground.
When properly treated, the water provides a most refreshing and healthy beverage which should command a ready sale in the market.
Mr kelly does not intend to confine himself to the New Zealand market only, but proposes to send a shipment to the Australian market.
Mr Kelly deserves every success on his undertaking, and it is hoped he will meet with sufficient inducement to warrant his manufacturing the cordial on a large scale.
